Aemetis Awarded First CO2 Sequestration Permit in California

Aemetis, the biofuels producer, announced on Tuesday that its carbon capture subsidiary has been granted California’s first permit for a CO2 sequestration characterization well.

The well, to be drilled on the Riverbank site, is projected to sequester approximately 1.4 million metric tons per year of CO2. Of this, around 200,000 metric tons will come from Aemetis’ sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel plant, currently under development on an adjacent parcel of land.

With a planned depth of 8,000 feet, the characterization well aims to obtain vital soil composition data necessary for the issuance of a final EPA Class VI Carbon Capture and Sequestration well permit.

Over the span of two decades, the project is forecasted to inject and sequester a total of 28 million metric tons of CO2 in saline formations.

Aemetis has recently completed the construction of an access road and operational pad for the rig and related equipment.

Additionally, the company unveiled its five-year expansion plan earlier this year. This expansion includes the production of negative-carbon-intensity renewable natural gas, sustainable aviation fuel, renewable diesel fuel, and other products.

Furthermore, Aemetis has outlined plans to expand its dairy RNG business with pipeline and digester construction. The company also intends to construct a renewable jet/diesel plant capable of producing 90 million gallons per year. In addition, two CO2 carbon sequestration and underground storage characterization and injection wells will be drilled near the biofuels plant sites in California. Lastly, energy efficiencies and electrification projects at the Keyes biofuels plant will be improved.
