What is Ethereum?

Ethereum is a crypto coin leveraging blockchain technology to let individuals take care of economic affairs without the involvement of an intermediary body. Ether is the native token of this platform. In 2013, Russian-Canadian programmer and developer Vitalik Buterin introduced this cryptocurrency.

Ethereum runs on a decentralized and open-source network that has no central authority. This network, known as a blockchain, holds information that can be utilized for tracking and managing an asset. The evidence of each business deal is stored in the blockchain, and systems that form part of the network maintain the coherence of the information and substantiate the deals.

For a deal to be authentic, it must be validated through mining. Ethereum uses a proof of stake security protocol where a certain number of nodes use their resources to build authentic transaction blocks. This technology lets you interact with smart contracts and create decentralized applications. With the help of DeFi apps, users can enjoy financial services without dealing with institutions like banks, exchanges, and brokerages.

When in 2015 the initial block of this crypto coin was introduced, there was a total supply of 72 million coins. Currently, there are more than 118 million of ETH coins available on the market.
