Marathon Digital to Transition Montana Mining Facility to Sustainable Energy

Mining Facility to Sustainable Energy

Cryptocurrency mining company Marathon Digital plans to move its coal-powered Montana mining facility to locations using clean energy.

The step is geared towards carbon neutrality goals by the close of the year with the use of non-carbon emitting sources of energy.

Marathon Digital Chief Executive Officer, Fred Thiel, says that it is the right time for the company to move away from fossil fuel toward sustainable power sources.

The announcement comes as crypto miners focus more on renewable energy amid regulatory pressure that has accused the sector of energy inefficiency.

Greenpeace has unveiled a campaign to pressure the bitcoin network to move to more efficient energy sources. This comes as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change terms crypto as the most significant source of carbon dioxide emission.

Marathon has the third-largest bitcoin holdings ahead of Tesla and MicroStrategy, with the latter having added 4,167 BTC worth $190.5 million recently.
