Structural Changes Set to Benefit American Express in the Long Term

Anna Marrs is looking ahead to a year of growth and expansion for American Express’ commercial-services business. As the group president of commercial services and credit and fraud risk at the renowned card issuer, Marrs leads a dedicated team of 6,250 professionals who cater to millions of business customers worldwide, providing them with corporate and small-business cards, along with other essential services. Additionally, she is responsible for overseeing credit quality and fraud controls for both business and consumer cards.

According to Marrs, American Express is well-positioned to capitalize on long-term, prevalent trends that are reshaping the business landscape. One such trend is the digitization of business payments, which is expected to significantly benefit the company. In 2021, Marrs’ team introduced Business Blueprint, an innovative cash-flow management hub tailored specifically for small businesses. Furthermore, they have been actively assisting businesses in resuming their travel activities post-pandemic by offering American Express products designed to meet their unique requirements.

The commercial-services division holds substantial significance within the company, representing 45% of American Express’ billed business. In 2022 alone, this segment generated an impressive $13.6 billion in revenue.

Steve Squeri, chairman and CEO of American Express, acknowledges the pivotal role played by Anna Marrs in the company’s success. He emphasizes her contributions to delivering their growth plan, particularly through integrated B2B offerings that target the small and midsize business segment.

Marrs serves as a valued member of the company’s executive committee and also assumes the executive chair position for its annual Give2Gether campaign.
