Credit card company American Express has applied to file seven new trademarks to provide virtual banking, crypto services, and NFTs in metaverse.
The application seeks to register the firm’s name, logo, slogans pointing out that it is a multinational company that focuses on payments and card services.
The filing, which reached the US Patent and Trademark Office on March 9, was announced in a post by a metaverse trademark attorney, Michael Kondoudis.
Kondoudis notes that with American Express being an established financial institution, its inroads into the metaverse underscores the sector’s importance.
The announcement follows a similar move by the New York Stock Exchange, which filed new trademarks last month to have its brand name registered for multiple cryptos and financial services.
The number of NFT trademark filings in the US surged 421 times last year compared to the prior year as celebrities and companies join the frenzy.
