Proposed Increase in Air Traffic Control Fees by NATS (En Route)

According to the regulator’s provisional decision, NATS’ average unit rate for regulated activities between 2023 and 2027 is forecasted to rise by approximately 26% compared to 2022, from £42 to £53.

NATS is responsible for providing air-traffic-control services to aircraft flying over the U.K. and the eastern part of the North Atlantic. With this proposed increase, the average unit rate would be set at £53 ($67.53).

The U.K. aviation and aerospace regulator estimates that this decision will result in an average increase of around 0.43 pence per passenger per flight, bringing the average cost of U.K. en route air traffic services to approximately £2.08.

Despite these adjustments, the CAA assures that NATS’ charges will remain below the average level observed during the Reference Period 2 price control period (2015-2019), prior to the pandemic’s impact. Additionally, the company’s charges are expected to align with those of its European counterparts.

This provisional decision by the regulator aims to enable NATS to recuperate costs associated with the pandemic while providing the necessary resources and investment for future planning and service modernization.
