Finance Minister Optimistic Indonesian Rupiah Will Rebound This Week

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Indonesian rupiah exchange rate at the end of the week, Friday, September 26, 2025, closed weaker at Rp16,775 per US dollar. Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa is convinced that the previously plummeting rupiah will recover.

The replacement minister for Sri Mulyani Indrawati stated that the improving economy will drive the strengthening of the Indonesian currency. Purbaya estimated that the rupiah will begin to strengthen by the middle of next week.

“By Tuesday or Wednesday, it will have to bounce back. I am clearly calculating that our economic foundation will continue to improve in the future. We are implementing policies to boost the economy, not playing games,” he said in a press conference quoted on Sunday, September 28, 2025.

Purbaya also mentioned that the depreciation of the rupiah against the dollar indeed affects the state revenue and expenditure budget (APBN). However, he is optimistic that the exchange rate depreciation is only temporary.

Previously, there were rumors that the weakening rupiah was due to the issue of state-owned bank members of the Association of State-Owned Banks (Himbara) raising foreign exchange (forex) deposit interest rates by 4 percent. Purbaya explained that the issue automatically triggered a desire to switch investments from rupiah to dollars.

The finance minister stated that he never instructed the banks to raise interest rates on foreign currency deposits. With this announcement, he is confident that the pressure on the rupiah can be alleviated. Additionally, Bank Indonesia (BI) will take aggressive and serious measures to maintain the value of the exchange rate within its authority. “I think it won’t be long before the rupiah bounces back,” he said.

Quoting data from the Jakarta Interbank Spot Dollar Rate (Jisdor) BI, the rupiah on Friday closed at Rp16,775 per U.S. dollar, or weakened compared to the closing on Thursday, September 28, which was Rp16,752 per U.S. dollar. The rupiah has declined compared to the closing on Friday, September 19, 2025, or the previous week, which closed at Rp16,578 per U.S. dollar.
