What is Tezos?

Tezos is a blockchain platform that facilitates P2P transactions and lets members execute smart contracts. Its native crypto coin is XTZ. The network was launched in June 2018 by Kathleen and Arthur Breitman. Token holders have the right to vote on future developments. Thus, the users have a direct influence over the platform’s operations.

In generic blockchains, there are generally three layers called network, transaction, and consensus protocols. Tezos establishes a communication medium between the two final layers through the Network Shell middleware. 

Thanks to its specialized architecture, the network can carry out adjustments without using a hard fork. The largest stakeholders hold voting privileges, but the election process can undergo amendment if needed. 

The consensus protocol used by Tezos is known as liquid proof-of-stake. To become a staker, an individual must keep at least 8000 coins as collateral. The platform has a unique self-governing mechanism and no central controlling body. Instead of placing votes directly, members can delegate the power to another individual. Delegators have the power to withdraw voting rights.
