What is Zcash?
Zcash is a privacy-enhancing cryptocurrency that offers anonymous value transfer based on zero-knowledge cryptography. The token’s zk-SNARK zero-knowledge proof enables nodes to verify transactions without showing the details. Zcash is secured with the proof-of-work consensus algorithm.
Zcash consists of private addresses dubbed z-addresses and transparent addresses, t-addresses. The two addresses are interoperable and support cross-transfer of assets. The data on the z-accounts about the sender, receiver, and amount of assets is encrypted despite appearing on the public blockchain. The account users have the option to disclose particulars to third parties through view keys and settlement disclosures.
There are 13,807,368.75 ZEC tokens in circulation from a total supply of 13,807,369 and a hard cap of 21 million. New ZEC tokens are minted in the form of block subsidies. When a new block is generated, a specific token amount is minted and separated as miner subsidy and founder’s rewards in a 4:1 ratio. The subsidy rewards are frequently halved as the supply approaches the limit.
The Zcash project, formally Zerocoin, began development in 2013. Some of the contributors include Matthew Green, Christina Garman, and Ian Miers from Johns Hopkins University.
