What is Stacks?
Stacks is a blockchain protocol that brings smart contracts and decentralized applications to Bitcoin. Stacks operates on top of the Bitcoin blockchain and is secured through the proof-of-work consensus algorithm.
The protocol, formally known as Blockstack, also runs on its consensus algorithm called the proof-of-transfer. PoX connects bitcoin and Stacks blockchains to enable miners to pledge BTC for an opportunity to earn STX. Stacks uses Clarity programming language based on unambiguous syntax for enhanced security in smart contracts. The protocol offers the infrastructure and developer tools to support decentralized applications.
STX is the primary token powering Stacks. There are 1.3 billion circulating STX from a total supply of 1,352,464,600 and a maximum supply of 1,818,000,000 tokens. STX is used in implementing smart contracts, transaction settlements, and deploying new assets on the protocol. STX holders can also stack their tokens to earn bitcoin.
Muneeb Ali and Ryan Shea created stacks in 2013. Blockstack PBC, the company behind the project, was rebranded to Hiro PBC and is currently based in New York City.
