What is Qtum?
Qtum is an open-source blockchain for smart contracts and value transfer. The platform is built on Bitcoin’s UTXO model and integrates Ethereum Virtual Machine to support decentralized applications, including DeFi. The protocol’s Account Abstraction Layer enables the EVM to run existing smart contacts with no adjustments. Qtum’s Contact Ledger hosts smart contract language, oracles, and data for contract implementation.
Qtum is secured through the proof-of-stake consensus algorithm with a Decentralized Governance Protocol that modifies blockchain metrics via smart contracts. The blockchain also plans to introduce Incentive proof-of-stake consensus algorithm, a model that will make it compatible with other networks like Bitcoin.
QTUM is the native token powering Qtum. The digital asset is used in paying transaction fees enhancing network security and governance. There are 99,048,393.73 circulating QTUM tokens from a total supply of 103,944,501 and a hard cap of 107,822,406. Users can vote by virtue of their staked tokens on proposals about the platform’s on-chain governance system.
QTUM can be staked to allow users to act as network validators and also in block generation. The token stakers earn a return as inflation or staking rewards for locking their tokens on the blockchain.
Patrick Dai, Neil Mahi, and Jordan Earls founded Qtum in 2016.
