What is Proton?
Proton is a smart contract blockchain supporting consumer applications and peer-to-peer transfers. The network allows the direct linking of fiat addresses and real user accounts where cryptocurrencies can be bought without sharing private data. The protocol uses namespaces to give users a verified identity confirmed by an approved identity provider. Proton leverages a unified identity model in on-chain transactions. The platform’s contract code is built on EIOS.IO and delegated Proof-of-Stake models.
XPR is the native token powering Proton. 8.51 billion XPR tokens are circulating from a total supply of 12,314,651,638. The token uses the proof-of-stake model in governance. XPR holders can lock their tokens where each token is entitled to a single vote. The protocol has a 30-day unstaking period for security measures. XPR token intends to apply moderate inflation as a store of value in the short term for decentralized applications. The token inflation is divided among block producers, stakers, and the project’s team.
Proton was built from a partnership of two firms, Lynx and Metal. Metal operates a peer-to-peer payment platform, while Lynx applications focus on blockchain technology. Marshall Hayner and Glenn Mariën Glenn are the co-founders at Proton, launched in 2020.
