What is Moonriver?
Moonriver is a parachain based on Kusama protocol, a canary network that allows developers to test projects before implementing them on Polkadot. Moonriver is an Ethereum Virtual Machine compatible smart contract network developed based on Substrate architecture. The network serves as a canary to Moonbeam to test changes and features before integration. Moonriver parachain won an auction in June of 2021 to launch on Kusama.
Moonbeam and Moonriver share a testnet known as Moonrock, a parachain on Polkadot’s Rococo testnet. Moonriver relies on the Kusama Relay Chain as a security layer and the settlement layer for inter-parachain communication. Moonriver uses a Nominated proof-of-stake consensus algorithm in securing transactions.
MOVR is Moonriver’s native token that enables holders to participate in consensus via staking, payment of transaction fees, and governance through voting. There are currently 3,953,889 circulating MOVR tokens from a total supply of 10,310,342 and a maximum supply of 10 million. The initial token supply was 10 million, out of which 71% was set for pre-mined rewards and airdrops. Moonriver was developed by PureStake, an entity founded by Derek Yoo, and fully launched in August 2021.
