What is Moonbeam?
Moonbeam is a parachain for smart contracts on Polkadot that is compatible with Ethereum. The Ethereum compatibility enables developers to deploy Solidity smart contracts and decentralized applications at a relatively lower cost. The platform is developed based on Rust programming language on Substrate framework. The Ethereum compatibility with Moonbeam can be executed using Solidity, Vyper, and related smart contract languages.
Moonbeam, Moonriver, and Moonrock are the three networks in the ecosystem. Moonbeam benefits from Polkadot’s nominated proof-of-stake consensus algorithm, which features validators and nominators.
Glimmer (GLMR) is the native token powering Moonbeam. The coin is used to settle transaction fees, power smart contracts, incentives, and on-chain governance. There are 200,568,382 circulating GLMR tokens from a total supply of 1,011,122,855 and a hard cap of 1billion. A portion of the token supply is allocated to Moonbeam’s crowd loan. Approximately 16% is set aside for public sale. Moonbeam’s governance permits token holders to participate in governance. Governance is divided into referendum, voting, council, technical committee, and treasury.
Moonbeam was founded by Derek Yoo under blockchain firm PureStake. The project’s mainnet launched in 2022.
