What is Mina Protocol?
Mina is a cryptocurrency with a succinct blockchain that remains the same size no matter the usage. The technology is enabled through the cryptographic zero-knowledge Succinct Non-Interactive Argument of Knowledge. The Mina network is 22KB in size, which compares to bitcoin’s 300GB protocol. Every newly minted block is accompanied by SNARK proof that validates the block. Network nodes store the proof and not the entire chain, enabling a decentralized and scalable protocol.
Mina is created for payment services with high-speed verification times of 200ms, allowing mobile devices and clients to participate in verification. Mina is secured via provably-secure proof-of-stake consensus called Ouroboros Samasika. The project team believes that the network can become more decentralized if more validators can run nodes under a smaller blockchain size.
MINA is the native token in Mina protocol that serves as a utility currency and a medium of exchange. There are 415,203,993.84 circulating MINA tokens from an uncapped supply of 824,104,972. MINA acts as collateral and an incentive for block producers.
Mina protocol was created by a team of developers from O(1) Labs founded by Evan Shapiro and Izaak Meckler. Mina Mainnet debuted in 2021.
