What is Livepeer?
Livepeer is an open-source video streaming protocol based on the Ethereum blockchain. The network is secured through Ethereum’s consensus while the tokenomics is under a delegated proof-of-stake consensus algorithm. All the delegators can vote using their stakes while they think validator nodes override the decision of their respective delegators.
The native currency holders can run nodes or delegate by staking LPT tokens for fees paid in Ether. Nodes that act maliciously are slashed if they misencode the content. Livepeer governance uses off-chain coordination to support on-chain proposals and decision-making.
LPT is the native token powering Livepeer protocol. The token is an ERC-20 digital asset supported on multiple DeFi platforms and Ethereum-based wallets. There are 21,164,655.33 circulating LPT tokens from a total supply of 22,859,012 and a hard cap of 22,906,951. The initial allocation of LPT was distributed to the community at project inception. LPT is an inflationary token where additional tokens are minted regularly to act as rewards for node verification.
Livepeer was founded by Doug Petkanics and Eric Tang, and the project was launched in 2017.
