What is Kusama?
Kusama is an experimental version of Polkadot that operates as an autonomous network. The platform allows new projects to test their pre-release versions before launching on Polkadot’s mainnet. Kusama uses Substrate, a Software Development Kit that supports parachains. The protocol links various blockchains into a single sharded network for interoperability.
Kusama is secured through the nominated proof-of-stake consensus algorithm featuring nominators and validators. Validators validate blocks and guarantee the finality of the blockchains. Nominators choose validators with their vote weighted in KSM tokens. Kusama features a relay chain that acts as the primary chain. Parachains introduce new transaction blocks to relay-chain validators, where they are checked for availability and validity before completion.
KSM is the native currency of Kusama. There are 8,470,098.06 circulating KSM from a total supply of 9,651,217 and no available hard cap. The token is used as a bond to validate transactions or launch parachains. KSM also powers transactions and governance.
Gavin Wood unveiled Kusama in 2019. Wood is the creator of Polkadot and the co-founder of Ethereum.
