What is Horizen?
Horizen is a protocol that supports enterprise-level blockchains and decentralized applications. Individual users and businesses can develop their private blockchains and decentralized applications with Horizen. The project features a sidechain called Zendoo, which acts as a cross-chain transfer protocol.
Horizen was forked from Zclassic blockchain at block number 110000. The issuance continued from block number 110001 within a centralized treasury. Horizen uses zero-knowledge proof to enhance communication across sidechains. The network is secured through the proof-of-work consensus algorithm.
ZEN is the native token powering Horizen. There are 12,187,487.50 circulating ZEN tokens from a total supply of 12,093,400 and a hard cap of 21 million. ZEN had no token sale or pre-mine at inception.
Governance in Horizen is managed through the Horizen Improvement Proposal process that is open for anyone to submit draft ZenIPs. The governance aspects revolve around project upgrades and all the decisions must pass through the Horizen community and the ZenIP editors. Each of the three entities that make up the protocol, Horizen community council, Horizen Labs, and Zen Blockchain Foundation, has one editor.
Rob Viglione and Rolf Versluis are the co-founders of Horizen. The project launched in 2017 as ZenCash. Most protocol development of Horizen is conducted by a non-profit entity called Zen Blockchain Foundation.
