What is Handshake?

Handshake is an open-source, peer-to-peer protocol that manages domain name ownership. The decentralized platform incentivizes a network of nodes to run a domain name service. Each peer in the network validates the root DNS naming area to provide an option to existing certificate authorities and naming systems. Handshake enables users to contribute to network security by operating a full node.

Handshake is secured with the Unspent Transaction Output and the Proof-of-Work consensus. The system’s daemon, hsd, is in Javascript and was developed as a fork of bcoin. A light client called hnsd, is based on C and verifies blockchain data. It serves provable resource records without full node resource requirements. Handshake decentralizes the root zone and the top-level domain and not an overhaul to the overall DNS architecture. 

HNS is the currency  powering Handshake. There are 452,823,804.18 circulating tokens, a total supply of 452,839,797 and a hard cap of 2,040,000,000. Handshake uses a utility coin system in name registration and an open-source process to mark ownership and decentralize the ecosystem.
