What is Gemini Dollar?
Gemini Dollar is a regulated fiat-collateralized stablecoin issued by Gemini Trust Company, LLC. The stablecoin is minted when a user purchases the token with USD on the Gemini exchange. The asset can be redeemed at a 1:1 ratio to the US dollar in accounts managed by Gemini, where it is burned, and fiat currency sent to the user’s bank address.
Gemini dollar is transferable on the Ethereum blockchain. The stablecoin features three smart contracts in its architecture; Proxy, Impl, and Store. Proxy is Gemini’s permanent address on the Ethereum blockchain that delegates token features to a smart contract called Impl. Impl in turns delegates ownership to the ledger of smart contract called Store, an external and permanent Gemini dollar ledger.
GUSD is an ERC20 standardized token that is built on the Ethereum blockchain. There are currently 269,979,553.42 circulating GUSD from an uncapped supply of 266,508,780 tokens.
The founders of Gemini Dollar are Tyler Winklevoss and Cameron Winklevoss, who are also the co-founders of the Gemini exchange. GUSD is regulated by the New York State Department of Financial Services and operates under the New York Banking Law. The token was launched in 2018.
