What is Civic?

Civic is a blockchain-based identity verification protocol that enables companies and individuals to manage their personal information. The project uses a cryptographically secured database that gives users control over who can access their data and how it is stored. 

Civic aims to reduce identity theft and open access in areas like government services. The protocol uses Reusable identity verification as the core architecture, where people can safely share blockchain-attested data. Civic currently leverages the bitcoin network for basing attestation and the Ethereum blockchain for smart contracts that implements marketplace dynamics between the users and the protocol. 

There are currently 670,000,000 circulating CVC tokens from an uncapped supply of 1,000,000,000. CVC was launched through a crowdsale in 2017 with an initial supply of 1 billion. The sale raised $33 million worth of Bitcoin and Ether at an average price of $0.1 per CVC. Of the 1 billion initially minted tokens, 33% were sold during a project sale, 33% allocated to the company, 1% for the cost of token sale, and 33% was set aside to a fund managed by Civic. Civic was co-founded by Vinny Lingham and Jonathan Smith in 2018.
