What is Audius?
Audius is a decentralized music-streaming protocol developed on a blockchain. The platform enables artists to sell their content directly to consumers. Audius uses decentralized storage, a ledger for distributing audio and metadata. The content ledger is a form of a smart contract based on the Ethereum blockchain and other Layers-two solutions. Users can access the metadata via a discovery interface, and governance is enhanced through open decision-making in network upgrades.
$AUDIO is the native token of the protocol used in governance, security, and access. Staking of the token enables node operators to operate the protocol and artists to access the features. 509,912,301 $AUDIO are circulating out of a capped limit of 1,066,858,974 tokens and no maximum supply.
Audius would use stablecoin payments from third parties to cushion against volatile prices. The stablecoin transactions attract a percentage fee into a pool managed by AUDIO token holders. The network would also feature an Artist token, which content creators can distribute to fans to enable them to access their music.
Roneil Rumburg and Forrest Browning are the co-founders at Audius. The project’s beta release was in 2019.
